Daily Bread (sermon 2.3.19)

It all started with a simple prayer almost 30 years ago now..."Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat."

That little prayer gave birth to a big idea: "Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy?" (souperbowl.org)

At Tyger River Presbyterian, we celebrate the Souper Bowl of Caring every year on Super Bowl Sunday. Our youth help lead this fundraiser that raises donations for our Feed the Future ministry. Feed the Future provides food for children and families at River Ridge Elementary School--our across the street neighbors. Food is packed by our Youth and placed in children's backpacks every week, and Tyger River continues to provide food for the families throughout the summer as well.

When we pray the Lord's Prayer, we say "give us this day our daily bread." That line from the Lord's Prayer is a reminder of our dependence on God, our creator and provider. But it is also a reminder of our dependence on each other.

In this week's sermon, we take a closer look at the Lord's Prayer from Matthew's gospel, especially the prayer for "daily bread."
